American Legion - National Commander's Dinner April 8, 2022, at Anton's Queens

 Post Commanders:

 

          Just a brief note to let you know where we are at with the National Commanders visit to the downstate area on April 8^th, 2022. Anton’s Catering Hall has been secured for the evening and the setup will be similar to the way it has been in previous years. We will have seating for 600 people at tables of 10, the Cocktail hour will start at 7PM and conclude at 8PM. There may be a change in the Program resulting in a short delay in dinner serving, we are working that out with the staff at Anton’s. I have received several minor complaints over the years that dinner was too soon after the Cocktail hour. We are making an effort to adjust that, if possible. I will keep you informed of the final decision when it is made.

 

       The cost of the dinner will be $70.00PP, the price has remained constant the past few years and with rising food and employee costs I thought it would be prudent to increase it at this time. The dress for gentlemen at dinner will remain the same as always, suit and tie for table guests and black tuxedos with black accessories (tie & vest) for dais guests. I really shouldn’t have to say this but ……. NO SHORTS, TEE SHIRTS, SANDALS OR SNEAKERS THAT LOOK LIKE SHOES. With the sudden drop in Covid-19 variant cases across the State I am very hopeful of a significant decrease in our ‘restrictions and a return to normalcy in our day-to-day activities.

American Legion: In Memoriam John . Sampson

In Memoriam: John B. Sampson

John was a Past Department Commander and a true friend. He will be missed but we have his lifelong dedication to Veterans as a Service Officer and his dedication to the cardinal principles of the American Legion to remember him. Good Bye my friend

John B. Sampson, 72, of Salamanca, NY died early Tuesday morning, January 25, 2022 at Olean General Hospital after battling both dementia and sundowners syndrome.

Born March 24, 1949 in Massillon, OH he was the son of the late Richard and Marie Riordan Sampson. He was married on May 31, 1969 at the the former St. Patrick’s RC Church to the former Vicki Jean Lowrey, who survives.

John bravely joined the United States Navy when he was a young man. He served honorably from August 1967 through February 1972, with assignments on the USS Freemont, APA44, and at the Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX as part of a joint military command. He was honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd Class Personnel Man (E5).

He made his mark as an accredited director of Veterans Affairs with the Veterans Service Office for Cattaraugus County, holding the position for 22 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535, where he held positions at National, Department, County, and Post levels. He was past-president of the NYS Veterans Service Office Association and a founder of the Cattaraugus-Allegany Joint Veterans Council volunteer-run service. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296 and the Sons of the American Legion, and had been named to the NYS Veterans Hall of Fame by Senator Cathy Young.

Surviving besides his wife are: a daughter, Candice Joy O’Neil, Salamanca, NY; a son, Todd Richard (Denise) Sampson, Bradford, PA; three grandchildren that were his whole heart; a brother, Douglas (Sandy) Sampson, Salamanca, NY; two sisters-in-law, Carol (Terry) Miles, Hornell, NY, and Linda Wenzel, Gulfport, MS; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, NY on Friday, January 28, 2022 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Michael Lonto officiating.

Full military honors will be conducted by members of the American Legion Hughes-Skiba Post 535 and Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post 5296.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Legion Post 535 Building Fund, 67 Wildwood Avenue, Salamanca, NY 14779.

    The annual Toys for Toys collection campaign was conducted with the help of local businesses, veterans organizations, and active duty Marines. This program's goal is, through the gift of a new toy, help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America's less fortunate children. 

    Members of the Marine Corps League Yankee Detachment #255, American Legion Post #620, and 6th Communications Battalion conducted a highly coordinated effort of distribution and collection in support of the Toys for Tots campaign. Beginning in November, collection boxes were distributed across the Bronx to business that support the program as collection locations. This year the group collected approximately 2700 toys which beat the previous year's record. 

    Special thanks to the American Legion Post #620 and 6th Comm Bn for the success of this campaign. Below are photos from their successful collection efforts completed in mid December. 

Update 12/23: Additional pickup from Tilloston Ave, Cube Smart increased the total collection to a final total of 3000 toys. Special thanks to Ferdinand Garcia for making this happening.

American Legion - New York City Veterans Day Parade ASSEMBLY LOCATION AND TIME

A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW YORK DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT

Legionnaires,

    The American Legion Department of New York will once again be marching down the ‘CANYON OF HEROS’ in New York City on Veterans Day, November 11^th, 2021. The parade was cancelled last year due to the ongoing pandemic and there are still some limitations in the city, and we will be following them to the letter. The Lt. B.R. Kimlau Post #1291 color guard will be leading us this year and the American Legion float will follow us down the parade route. You are welcome to ride the float if you need to but remember it is limited in space. A few years back the weather was extremely cold and windy so please dress appropriately. The parade committee only allows us one color guard and no additional flags or banners except for the DNY American Legion banner. I have been informed that a contingent from National Headquarters will be attending and doing a podcast along the route. Delegations from our neighboring states are also planning to attend and it will be nice to see them once again as things slowly creep back to normal. In previous years we have assembled around noon on 28^th Street between 6^th Avenue and Broadway and we dispersed at 48^th Street. Traditionally we would assemble at P. J. Morgan’s pub after the parade to raise a glass to all our fellow Veterans who were not with us on that day, I’m sorry to say that that will not happen this year due to Covid restrictions. If you would like to continue the tradition, please don’t bring a large group to a pub as some still have capacity restrictions and Covid Vaccination cards may be required. As soon as I am notified of our exact staging area and time, I will let you know. Please come and join us as we salute our fellow Veterans and continue this great tradition.
