American Legion - Team New York

TEAM NEW YORK

Fellow Legionnaires,

During August 2020, Team New York mailed a donation request to every Post in the Department of New York requesting support for Vincent James "Jim" Troiola who had been selected by our national leaders as a candidate to become National Commander of the American Legion. We fully realize that this request was made during the peak of the pandemic and many posts were not meeting and many post homes were closed because of State New York mandates.

Reports are now informing us that positive COVID 19 tests are being reduced every day along with the number of hospitalizations and number of deaths. With the number of vaccinations increasing, there is the beginning of a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. Many post homes have opened and many posts, counties, and districts have begun meeting following State guidelines of social distancing and mask wearing.

In recent weeks, the gentleman that was to precede Jim as National Commander, Randall Fisher of Kentucky, passed away after a two-week battle with COVID 19, a devastating loss to The American Legion. As a result, Jim's candidacy is accelerated by a year.

For those that have already contributed we are most grateful. For those that have not had the opportunity yet, we are once again requesting that you consider donating to Jim Troiola's campaign fund. Your generous donation will assist him in meeting all the requirements of campaigning for this high office. Please make your contributions payable to "Team New York Campaign Fund" and mail it to Department of New York Offices at 1304 Park Blvd, Troy, New York 12180 or to donate online please visit https://vincentjtroiola.com/web/donate/.

The Team New York Committee thanks you in advance for both your consideration and generosity.

Yours for the Good of the Legion,

Mike

MCHF - Weekly Brief March 25, 2021

Lynn Kinney (left), Megan McClung (center) and Amy Forsythe (right) served together during their deployment to Camp Fallujah, Iraq in 2006.

Marine Highlight

We honor and remember Maj Megan McClung, the first female Marine Corps officer to be killed in action in Operation Iraqi Freedom. McClung was serving as a media relations officer in Iraq in December 2006 when the convoy she was riding in was struck by a roadside bomb, killing her instantly.
Known for her motto, "Be brief. Be Bold. Be gone.", Maj McClung's legacy lives on. There have been several leadership awards and a scholarship established in her name, including the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation's Major Megan McClung Award, which highlights great reporting by an individual covering Marines abroad.

Women's History Month

Since proclaimed by Public Law 100-9 in 1987, March is observed as “National Women’s History Month.” During this month, we take the opportunity to honor all women and to acknowledge their ongoing contributions to the success and development of our Nation.
The 2021 observance theme is: “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.” Learn more about the history of women in the Marine Corps here.

Marksmanship Competition

Staff Sgt. Robert Germanelo, Rifle Team Head Coach, Marine Corps Shooting Team, explains the dynamics of the team matches held during the U.S. Marine Corps Marksmanship Competition, Marine Corps Base Quantico. Marines from various units participated in a two day event, where the top shots were awarded. The competition consisted of various live fire drills under time limits and pistol marksmanship courses.

Marine Corps History

25 March, 1990: Congress designates 25 March annually as the "National Medal of Honor Day." Today the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation reflect on the selflessness and sacrifice worn by each recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Marine Corps Trivia

The answer to our last trivia question can be found here! Here's this week's question - do you know the answer?
Q: Since 1862, nearly 300 Marines have been bestowed with the military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Only two Marines have been awarded this honor twice. Can you name both Marines?
