MCL - Passing of Marine Eric Bellamy

Marine Corps League - Department of New York E-Blast
Passing of Marine Eric L. Bellamy
of the
John W. Thurston Detachment #250

Marines,

It is a with a heavy heart that on June 25, 2020, United States Marine Corps Corporal Eric L. Bellamy was called to service in the Heavenly Kingdom of his Lord after valiantly and bravely fighting a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was only 50. He leaves behind a legacy of service to his country and love for family, especially his beloved daughter Leah Bellamy, age 11 and Leah's mother and Eric's dear friend, Amy MacLeod. He is also survived by his mother Mary Maysonet and three brothers, Ray, Marco and Matthew Maysonet, his best friend and "brother" Joe Burt and his Marine Corps brothers of "Hotel 3/12". Eric was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Emily and Charles DeWette.

Born in Paterson, NJ, Eric enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from high school. He served as a combat veteran and attained the rank of Corporal. After receiving his discharge he relocated to Binghamton where he worked for many years as a carpenter and later began his final career serving other veterans by working at the Binghamton VA Center helping veterans secure their benefits. Eric served as Commandant of the John W. Thurston Marine Corps League in 2018. He was also honored by the Broome County Legislature in 2018 with the "Veterans of Distinction" award.

He enjoyed camping and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his daughter. They enjoyed playing video games, going to movies and attending the Renaissance Fair.

Eric and his family were deeply appreciative of all the love and support provided to him and them during his illness. The family especially wishes to acknowledge the nursing staff on South Tower 5 at Wilson Hospital for the wonderful care they provided Eric during his hospitalizations.

 The family will receive friends from 11:30 am - 1:15 pm Wednesday, July 1st at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Highland Ave. Binghamton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 pm. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please make a memorial to pancan.org

MCL - Marine Corps League National Convention

Marine Corps League - Department of New York E-Blast
In this E-Blast:
  • National Convention - Cancelled
  • DC Battle of the Barbeque
National Convention - Cancelled

Marines,

The National Commandant announced today, that after careful consideration, the National Board of Trustees has decided that it is in the best interest of all our members that we cancel the 2020 National Convention in Daytona Beach Florida. The cancellation had been completed with the Marine Corps League attorneys, just yesterday. They did not expect the hotel to start refunds immediately, so some of you may have been notified before the official announcement was made.

You can view the announcement from National Commandant Dennis Tobin on Facebook using this link:

For those who had reservations, please check your credit cards to ensure the proper amounts have been refunded. If there is an issue, please contact the hotel. If it is still not resolved, as per Commandant Tobins remarks, you can contact him.
DC Battle of the Barbeque

A message from National COO Bob Borka:

This is a little unorthodox for me to send but thought it important to virtually help defend a title representing a Marine Corps Veteran in the DC Battle of the BBQ against all other service branches.

S/F
Bob Borka

Here are the details:

From June 1 to June 21, the DC Battle of the Barbeque will take place virtually. This benefits the USO. There is a USO Military Chef Cook Off featuring the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.

VOTE for the team representing Marine Corps service - MGySgt Jeremiah Burns (USMC/Ret). Click on this link to check them out:

It looks like the other branches of the military are making a full court press to take the defending champion's title. Let's keep it with our Marine!

Social Media and the Marine Corps League

Marines,

Most of us these days have a social media presence, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat and so many others. As a reminder, what you post on your own account is your own business, however, if you are posting in the name of a Detachment, Pound, Department, Division, you are posting as a representative of the Marine Corps League. We want to take a moment to remind everyone that the Marine Corps League is a non-partisan, organization. We do not post political content to our League pages/account, or in the name of the League. This is a violation of our National bylaws.

For reference here is the related section:

Section 210. Non-Discrimination. The Marine Corps League:

a. Shall never take part in any labor or management dispute or issue;

b. Shall not be sectarian, political, and partisan;

c. Shall not be based on race, color, creed, nationality, or sex;
