Department Commandant's Christmas Message
Members and Detachments of the Department of New York,
As we enter phase two of the COVID-19 virus, I understand
that detachment are once again closing down of the duration. As we did
the first time, please, keep in contact with your members.
If you have a newsletter, an email blast or even someone
making phone calls, make sure that your membership is healthy and doing
OK. It is very important that our members not feel alone or uncared for.
Remember, we are a brother and sisterhood and we stick together. We
always help and assist our membership.
As much as the Rose program is been badly affected by the
virus, I am sure the Toys for Tots campaign is also affected yet many of
you are out there doing your thing. All we can do, is our best and I am
sure you are doing so.
Hopefully all this will pass and I will see you at our Winter
staff meeting in Suffern. This will be the third time we have been here
and Area Vice Pisciotti once again has done a fine job of making all
the arrangements. I pray all his work is not in vain.
As you should also know, the vaccine is here and is being
distributed as I type this. There are many questions about it and if you
get it or not is a personal decision. I will be first one line to get
it once it is available in my area. Keep in mind it will take time to
get to you.
As a Department Commandant I get daily updates and will keep your officers up to date as updates come in.
I also understand that the VA will give the shot to all
veterans enrolled in the system be it Tri-Care or the VA Health plan.
But besides this, the VA has been charged to also inoculating all
federal employees, plus the active and reserve units of our armed
forces. And while many of us are at or past the age where we will be on
top of the list to get it, never the less this will be a monumental
task.
Depending on the brand, you will have to return in 21 or 28
days to receive you second shot. I urge you to be sure you do return if
you took the first shot. It is that important to be protected. Also keep
in mind that it will take 3 to 5 days for the vaccine to take affect on
you. So, you could get COVID-19 during that period so be safe.
There will be an end to this, I promise and I think the more people who get vaccinated the sooner it will happen.
Semper Fi,
Tom Wortmann
Department Commandant
