We
are very pleased to share the news with you that the Commander John
Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019 was
signed into law on October 17, 2020 by President Donald J. Trump. The
new law will increase Veterans’ access to mental healthcare and make it
easier for them to receive support in moments of crisis.
It
requires that suicide prevention coordinators will be placed in every
VA hospital and the number of locations that Veterans have access to VA
Telehealth Services will be greatly increased. In addition, it increases
evidence-informed mental health and suicide prevention programs at the
state and local levels, as well as creates a collaboration program
between the VA and community organizations to identify risk and early
warning signs for individuals.
This
announcement marks a large step to improving the mental healthcare and
suicide prevention for Veterans and all Americans. These new additions
directly address the PREVENTS Roadmap, and we are excited to press on in
the national effort to change the culture on mental health and suicide
prevention in America.

Why We REACH
So
many of our Nation’s Veterans carry both the physical and unseen wounds
from war, which is why it is critical we learn and understand what they
may be experiencing. In this video,
RDML James Hancock and his battle buddy, Izzy, want to remind you that
while someone may look fine on the outside, they may be struggling with
something much greater deep down.
We
encourage you to follow RDML Hancock’s advice to REACH out and ask
someone how they are really feeling and engage them about changes in
their life or difficult feelings they are experiencing, while offering
your support. It’s vital that we are present for one another, so do not
be afraid and do not wait to reach out. Offering help in someone’s time
of need has the power to drastically alter a life and prevent suicide.
This is extremely important to help not just Veterans, but all
Americans.
Together, we will prevent suicide.
