MCHF 39th Annual Awards Program

Each year, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Annual Awards Program recognizes exemplary work that furthers the understanding of Marine Corps history, traditions, culture and service. Given the persistent concerns surrounding COVID-19, travel and large gatherings, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has made the decision to transition the postponed 39th Annual Awards Program from an in-person event to a virtual one. The virtual event will take place on 24 April 2021 at 1900. For more information, please contact webster@marineheritage.org.

Marine Highlight

Major Norman Hatch, USMCR (Ret) served as a combat photographer during World War II. He is best known for his film footage of the fighting on Tarawa featured in the documentary “With the Marines at Tarawa." The documentary won an Academy Award in 1945 and is highlighted in the Museum's WWII gallery. He also served on Iwo Jima and with the occupying forces in Japan. Hatch served a total of 41 years in the Marines.
The Foundation honors his legacy each year with our Major Norman Hatch Award which is given for the best documentary (longer than 40 minutes) dealing with historical or current Marine Corps subjects.

Marine Corps History

21 April 1914: Marine regiments land at Veracruz, Mexico to keep German arms away from the Mexican government. Two days later Marine and Navy forces complete the seizure of Veracruz after heavy street fighting. Nine Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor for their courage during the two-day battle.

Marine Corps Trivia

The answer to our last trivia question is Floyd Gibbons! Here's this week's question - do you know the answer?
Q: In 1805, the Commonwealth of Virginia presented a weapon to First Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Derna, and replicas of it are currently used today by Marine officers. What is this weapon?
