MCHF - Weekly Brief - April 8, 2021

Marine Highlight

A legend in the Corps, SgtMaj Dan Daly is one of only 19 U.S. service members to have received the Medal of Honor twice. He was awarded Medals of Honor for his heroic actions in the Boxer Rebellion (August 1900) and the first Haitian Campaign (October 1915).
SgtMaj Daly is also credited with saying, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" during the Battle of Belleau Wood in WWI which is engraved on the walls of the Museum's Leatherneck Gallery. The Foundation honors his legacy with our Sergeant Major Dan Daly Award which recognizes distinguished still photography capturing U.S. Marines or Marine Corps life.

Marine Corps History

6 April 1917: World War I officially begins for the United States. Congress declares "that a state of war exists between the United States and the Imperial German Government." The Marine Corps totaled 13,725 officers and enlisted men at the start of the war. During the war, the Corps would expand to 75,101 Marines.

Marine Corps Trivia

The answer to our last trivia question is MajGen Smedley Butler and SgtMaj Daniel Daly! Here's this week's question - do you know the answer?
Q: What is the name of the war correspondent for Chicago Tribune that accompanied the assault by the 5th Marines on Belleau Wood and eventually lost his left eye after being hit by German gunfire?
