American Legion - Buddy Check during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Good afternoon Dist. Area Membership leaders,

I am in hope that this email finds you, your families, and loved ones, heathy, and safe from harm.
As leaders of this great Veterans Organization, there are times we are asked to step out of our normal daily activities, or assignments.

Today, I ask that we all reach out to the Dist, and County leaders and utilize a program we Legionaries have called the “Buddy Check”. This is what we do first, and foremost, is to look out for our comrades. Check in on him/ her to see if they are in need, if they are healthy, if they require supplies, or they just need someone to talk to in this time of isolation.

I have attached below the “Buddy Check” program to use as a guild line. I urge everyone to get this word out, if you have not already done so. It is my hope that all are safe and sound. That we get through this time of uncertainty, we get back in full motion, and continue our mission as legionaries.

Now as we put on our other hat for the business you have been appointed, Membership! I am sure you all have received Cassi’s latest report on 3/20/2020. Before I go any further, this, as you know, is the most difficult hurdle in membership. Not to mention what we’re now up against. At this time, I ask you all to tread lightly with membership. Yes, continue with your objective, but not to overstep, or oversee what the members maybe dealing with. Be cognizant, and sympathetic to some who may feel they are having health issues or concerns.

As of 3/26/2020 we are 3,390 members behind of where we were last year. The Dept is 39th out of 55 reporting Depts. at 86.16%. We are 8588 members needed to obtain the April 1 target date. I have been asked, and will report, National has not changed any membership target dates due to the National crisis. If I hear of any changes, I will notify you promptly.

As of 3/20/2020, 5th Dist. is knocking it out of the park. Every County in the 5th, including the Dist. hit the March target date. They are presently at 92.70%, and well on their way to April’s date. Outstanding work!!

7th Dist. Is right on their heals reporting a 91.89%. 3rd is at 90.93%, 4th & 8th are tied at 90.40%. All of these Dist made the Dept target date. Great job, and keep it going.

9th@ 89.15%, 6th@ 88.97%, 10th@ 88.56%, 2nd@ 86.32%, and 1st@ 84.73%.
Keep up the great work you are doing in membership.

I ask that as you all going forward with membership, you proceed with the utmost caution. Membership should be handled either by mailings or phone calls. Refrain from any physical contact at this juncture. Let all remain healthy, and safe. We will overcome and persevere this world pandemic, and when we do, we’ll all be stronger, and better for it. God Bless you, your families, and God Bless the American Legion!

For God, and Country,

Gene Ordmandy jr
Dept Membership Chairman
