Devil Dogs Website Wins History Prize
Each
year, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation sponsors the USMC History
Prize, a special recognition, in the annual National History Day
competition. This year, Julienne Lim, a student at Mary G. Porter
Traditional school in Woodbridge, VA, took home the prize for her website titled Devil Dog Canines: A Line of Communication in World War II. Julienne also won 2nd place in the Junior Individual Website category at the state level competition and will be moving on to the national competition in a few weeks.
National
History Day is a non-profit education organization based in College
Park, MD. The organization offers academic programs which engage half a
million students worldwide, encouraging them to carry out original
research on historical topics. The students' projects are entered in
contests at the local and state levels with winners advancing to the
national contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. National
History Day's mission is to improve the quality of history education by
providing professional development opportunities and curriculum
materials for educators. Moreover, the organization aims to instill
important life skills in students such as critical thinking, self-esteem
and a sense of responsibility.

Marine Corps Milestones
Saturday,
May 15 is Armed Forces Day. Originally created in 1949 by Defense
Secretary Louis Johnson, the event replaced separate Army, Navy and Air
Force Days. Armed Forces Day is unique because it celebrates all aspects
of the military, those serving, those who have served and those who
died serving.
Monday,
May 31, marks Memorial Day, which honors the military men and women who
have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. On this most solemn
of days, we invite you to visit the Museum and learn about the
sacrifices made by Marines to keep America free and safe. They are
honored in the "Never Forget" section of Legacy Walk and remembered by
many of the memorials throughout Semper Fidelis Memorial Park.
