The National Museum of the Marine Corps reopens its doors on Monday, May 17 and the Foundation is announcing special offers to welcome visitors back.
  • On May 17, Medal of Honor Theater guests will receive a takeaway snack compliments of Tun Tavern;

"Semper Families" shares the evolution of the Marine family while the "Never Forget" area honors those Marines who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The competition hosted by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in conjunction with the Foundation is open to all high school string, piano and harp players. The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the Marine Chamber Orchestra and receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Foundation. Second and third-place winners will receive $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. You can read more about it and learn how to apply on the United States Marine Band's website.
The winner of the 2020 competition and recipient of the $2,500 MCHF scholarship, Aaron Lipsky, played with the President's Own in a recent online concert. You can see his performance on the Band's YouTube channel.
Devil Dogs Website Wins History Prize
Each year, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation sponsors the USMC History Prize, a special recognition, in the annual National History Day competition. This year, Julienne Lim, a student at Mary G. Porter Traditional school in Woodbridge, VA, took home the prize for her website titled Devil Dog Canines: A Line of Communication in World War II. Julienne also won 2nd place in the Junior Individual Website category at the state level competition and will be moving on to the national competition in a few weeks.
National History Day is a non-profit education organization based in College Park, MD. The organization offers academic programs which engage half a million students worldwide, encouraging them to carry out original research on historical topics. The students' projects are entered in contests at the local and state levels with winners advancing to the national contest at the University of Maryland at College Park. National History Day's mission is to improve the quality of history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators. Moreover, the organization aims to instill important life skills in students such as critical thinking, self-esteem and a sense of responsibility.
Marine Corps Milestones
Saturday, May 15 is Armed Forces Day. Originally created in 1949 by Defense Secretary Louis Johnson, the event replaced separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. Armed Forces Day is unique because it celebrates all aspects of the military, those serving, those who have served and those who died serving.
Monday, May 31, marks Memorial Day, which honors the military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. On this most solemn of days, we invite you to visit the Museum and learn about the sacrifices made by Marines to keep America free and safe. They are honored in the "Never Forget" section of Legacy Walk and remembered by many of the memorials throughout Semper Fidelis Memorial Park.
Charitable Giving Tip
If you are making gifts to the Foundation from a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with either Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable or the BNY Mellon Charitable Gift Fund, there is now an easy way to initiate your gift recommendations directly from our website. There are no administration or transaction fees for using this service. Currently, this is only available for DAFs held with the three sponsoring organizations mentioned above, but it is possible that more national and community foundation DAF sponsoring organizations may be added in the future; we will keep you posted. Be sure you have named ultimate beneficiaries of your DAF and when you do, please consider including MCHF.
If you have any questions or would like to explore ways to include the Foundation in your estate plans, please contact Gayle Union, at union@marineheritage.org, or call 703.586.7463. There is no obligation and all inquiries are confidential.
