Marine Corps Anniversaries
The
month of February is known for its many iconic anniversaries in Marine
Corps history. February 2, 1848 marked the end of the Mexican-American
War, from which The Marines’ Hymn
lyric "from the Halls of Montezuma" originates. The inspiration for the
line came from the Battle of Chapultepec, where Marines stormed
Chapultepec Castle. February 9, 1943 marked the withdrawal of Japanese
forces from Guadalcanal Island and ended Japan's last realistic hope to
withstand the U.S. counteroffensive. Two years and two weeks later, on
February 23, 1945, Marines would raise the United States flag over Iwo
Jima, the act preserved in one of the most iconic photos of all time.
The famous flag from the photograph is displayed in the Museum and its
raising is the inspiration for the Museum's exterior design. Finally,
February 20, 1962 marks the day that John Glenn, a lieutenant colonel in
the Marines, was successfully launched into space aboard the Friendship
7 spacecraft on the first orbital flight by an American astronaut.
The
Marine Corps Heritage Foundation remembers and honors the 76th
Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima with an exclusive look at the
documentary Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades. Learn more here.

Traveling Combat Art Exhibition
Earlier this month, the new traveling combat art exhibit entitled Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018
began its tour at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.
The exhibit will continue its tour through mid-2023 visiting a series of
west coast museums, as well as the National Museum of the Pacific War
and the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum, both of
which are located in Texas. The majority of the artwork on display comes
from the inaugural Combat Art Gallery exhibit at the National Museum of
the Marine Corps. The selected pieces include 34 works on canvas and
two sculptures that reflect the artists’ – most of whom were deployed in
combat – experiences with the Marine Corps.

Remembering George Shultz
Earlier
this month, former Secretary of State and Marine Corps veteran George
Shultz passed away at the age of 100 at his home in California. Shultz
is one of only two individuals who held four different federal cabinet
posts, serving as Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Labor and
Director of the Office of Management and Budget, in addition to his role
as the country's top diplomat. Schultz once said of his role as
Secretary of State, "It is the best job in government. Except for when I
was a captain in the Marine Corps."
Shultz's
incredible legacy includes his skillful navigation of some of the
world's most complex and contentious relationships to secure greater
stability and peace. Shultz experienced a world at war firsthand as a
Marine Corps artillery officer during WWII. In 2015, the Marine Corps
Heritage Foundation presented Shultz its highest award, the Lieutenant
General John A. Lejeune Recognition for Exemplary Leadership.

Charitable Giving Tip
Many
of our supporters have set up a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) – often
described as a checking or savings account for charitable giving. A DAF
is a convenient and easy way not only to support the Marine Corps
Heritage Foundation during your lifetime but also to make a legacy gift.
If you're not familiar with a DAF and its benefits, our updated website
has more information to help you. If you have any questions or would
like to explore other ways to include the Foundation in your estate
plans, please contact Gayle Union at union@marineheritage.org or call 703.586.7463. There is, of course, no obligation and all inquiries are confidential.
